Link exchange is nothing but say making a particular website popular by having links point to that website. Most of the times other websites if they find your website related and interesting they would point a link from their website to your website. But sometimes these links aren’t enough, especially when your competitor has more inbound links and is ranked higher compared to you. This is where link exchange comes into the place. So a webmaster of a particular website contacts other webmasters asking them to link back to their website and in return they too will be linking to their website. Hence the link ‘exchange’.
Google and various other search engines have various parameters that go into deciding how popular a website is compared to other website when you search for a particular keyword. So more popular a website, better it will be ranked in the search results. And to have maximum traffic directed to your website you need to be on top of search results, ranked higher than your competitor. So every website tries it hard to be the top search result when users search for them through particular keywords in search engines by SEM .
Google and other search engines decide the popularity of a website by checking number of links that are pointed to it by other websites by SEO related Activities. More number of other websites pointing to that website more popular it is in the eyes of search engines. So say if website A has 100 links pointing to it and website B has 50 links pointing to it, then website A is definitely termed as popular and will be ranked higher compared to website B in search results.
